Saying of the
Legend:
This is a popular folklore. Emperor Qinshihuang exhausted his people
and drained the treasury for securing national defense.
He built the Great Wall in the north.
Fan Jilang and Meng Jiangnu were newly married husband and
wife. Her husband was conscripted for hard labour to build the Great
Wall. He was gone for one year and more without any news of him.
Meng Jiangnu in order to look for her husband, suffered severe cold
to cross mountains and rivers, to reach the place where conscripts
were building the Great Wall. Out of the blue, she was told that
conscript officers beat her husband to death earlier.
Meng Jiangnu was in deep grief, and she cried aloud
uncontrollably. Her cries shook the earth, and at that time, part of
the Great Wall was broken down by her cries.
