Saying
of the Legend:
Intellectual Zhang Hong of Tang Dynasty went to the Capital to sit
for imperial examination. At
a stopover in a temple, which took in scholars for boarding, he met
Miss Cui Ying Ying, and both found themselves growing fondness for
each other. There was a rogue leader Sun Feihu leading a gang of
robbers surrounding the temple wanting to snatch Miss Cui away.
Madam Cui was feeling alarmed hopeless. She proposed that
whoever is able to relieve this seize, she would betroth her
daughter to that person. After hearing that, Zhang Hong hurriedly
sent a speed mail to his good friend, the White Horse General to
come to save Miss Cui and release the seize. But after successfully
repelling the robbers, Madam Cui unexpectedly abandoned her previous
agreement and instead held a thanksgiving banquet for Zhang Hong.
She only permitted Zhang Hong and Cui YingYing to be matched as
elder brother and younger sister and said that Cui YingYing already
being betrothed someone else early.
Zhang was very disappointed and waited for months in
the western Wing room. Luckily,
Miss Cui slave girl Hongniang acted as a go-between and passed
Zhang’s affectionate words to Cui Ying Ying and Zhang was able to
get her sworn to be each other’s life partner. Later, the western
wing room affair was exposed and Madam Cui tortured Hongniang, the
go-between. Instead, Hongniang accused her Madam of breaking her
promise and the Madam had nothing to say in reply. She then created
another obstacle again, saying that only if Zhang Hong had been able
to achieve scholarly honor or official rank; she would permit her
daughter to marry him as his wife. Zhang Hong studied hard and was
successful in his imperial examination, and the beautiful affair
eventually became a reality.
