Record of Events in Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple Centennial History

1917

Priest Xiao Tian Pin (萧天平) and Scholar Xie Li Wen (谢礼文) carried the An Xi Sheng Hong Wu Ser Gong (安溪城隍五舍公) statue to Singapore.  The statue was enshrined at Feng Li Shang Tian Gong Tan (凤梨山天公坛).  Mr Chen Qiu Lai (陈秋来) was the first official-in-charge of Sheng Hong Temple.

1926

Another Sheng Hong statue was enshrined at Yang Tao Yuan (杨桃园) Sheng Hong Temple.

1946

Mr Chen Qiu Lai handed the management of the Temple to his nephew, Mr Chen Meng Xie (陈孟斜).

1956

Mr Chen Meng Xie handed the Temple to cousin Mr Chen Jin Shang.

1967

Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple 7th Lunar Month Festival Organizing Committee was set up.

1978

Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple was affected by resettlement plans in the area.

1981

The Temple was officially registered as an Association and renamed “Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple Association”. The year also marked the inauguration ceremony of the 1st Management Committee of the Association.

1984

Government allocated a site for the new temple, to be shared with another temple – Feng Xuan Gong (凤玄宫).

1985

July

Commencement of the construction of the new temple.

1986

September

Statue of Sheng Hong Deity was temporarily housed in a temple.  Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple Association applied to be registered as a charity.

1988-1989

Completion of the construction for the new temple.  The statues of the Deities were enshrined in the Temple.  Mr Soon Nga Toh was elected as the Chairman and Mr Tan Thiam Lye as Honorary Secretary of Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple Association.

Revamped of the administration of the Temple took place.

1992

The Women’s Committee of Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple Association was formed.

1993

Commencement of the 2nd phase of construction for the Temple’s administrative block. Statue of Laughing Buddha was enshrined in the Temple and the Temple conducted rituals to usher in the God of Wealth.  The Taisui hall was added and 60 Taisui Generals were enshrined in the hall.

1994

Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple was officially registered as a charity.  The Temple raised funds for the National Kidney Foundation.  The Temple also established the Community Education Fund and Welfare Services to better serve the devotees and community.

1995

The Temple engaged Priest Cai Xin Zhi (蔡信志) from China as its first resident Priest.

1996

Xian Yue (仙乐) Scripture Chanting Group was formed and chanting classes were conducted for the 1st batch of students.

1997

Completion of the construction of Temple’s main hall and administrative block.  The Temple marked its 80th Anniversary.

Master Lu Xin Rui (卢信睿) from Beijing took over from Priest Cai Xin Zhi as the resident Priest.  The 2nd batch of the Scripture Chanting group commenced classes.

1999

The Temple embarked on a community project to start the Hougang Family Services Centre.  Taisui Thanksgiving prayer ritual was held.

2000

Sheng Hong Welfare Services was established.  Master Huang Xin Cheng (黄信成) from Beijing was engaged as an instructor for the Scripture Chanting group. The Orchestra Troupe was initiated.

2001

Awarded a land parcel via tender at Bedok North Ave 4 for the establishment of Koo Chye Ba San Qing Gong (三清宫), a subsidiary of Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple Association.

2001

April

2002

Addition of 12 Zodiac Animals Stone Sculptures

Organized a prayer tour to Anxi Sheng Hong Temple for members and devotees.  Tour leader Mr Tan Thiam Lye, BBM led the entourage to visit San Qing Gong Taoist Cultural Centre at Jiangxi Long Hu San (龙虎山).

2003

1st Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple Association Family Day was held during the Lunar New Year festive season.   Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple Taoist Orchestra Troupe was re-registered as Taoist Orchestra (Singapore).

2004

Jointly organized the 4th Taoist Cultural Concert with Fung Ying Seen Koon (蓬瀛仙馆) from Hong Kong and announcement on the setting up of Taoist Orchestra (Singapore).

Completion ceremony of San Qing Gong and consecration of Deities at the main hall.

2005

  • Lunar New Year events were organized
  • Took over the management of Macpherson Childcare Centre
  • Statue of Deity Zhen Wu Da Di (真武大帝) was enshrined at San Qing Gong

2006

Official unveiling of the Dao De Jing (道德经) Stone Sculpture (Singapore’s only sculpture of Taoist Scripture).

2007

5 April

Organized a 200-member entourage to offer prayers at Anxi Sheng Hong Temple.  The first event to commemorate the 90th Anniversary Celebration of Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple Association.

7 May

Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple organized a first ever 93-day Chinese opera and raised funds for NKF Hougang Dialysis Centre.

7 December

Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple invited Anxi Sheng Hong Deity Xian You Bo Zhu (显佑伯主) and the Seal of the Sheng Hong Deity as part of the celebrations.

9 December

Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple hosted a celebration dinner for 10,000 members with the theme “Racial & Inter-faith Harmony”.  The dinner was graced by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and also attended by members of the 10 major religions of Singapore.

10 December

Launch of book to commemorate 90th Anniversary of Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple.  1st International Sheng Hong Cultural Symposium was also held.

12 – 16 December

Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple conducted a prayer ritual to bless the people of Singapore in conjunction with the Taisui Thanksgiving prayer ritual.

14 December

Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple held a “Asia Cultural Night” at the foyer of the Temple as part of the celebrations.

15 December

Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple organized its 1st street procession parade for Sheng Hong Deity.

10 December

Renowned Taiwan Chinese opera troupe, Xin Ying Fong Opera (新樱凤歌剧团) and Ming Hua Yuan Opera (明华园歌仔戏团) performed on 27 nights at the Temple to celebrate the 90th Anniversary of the Temple.  This proceeds raised funds for Society of Sheng Hong Welfare Services.

1 June

Initiated by the Singapore Opera Institute, Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple organized a workshop on “Existence of Traditional Opera in Modern Society”.

2008

12 May

Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple Scripture Chanting Group performed a chanting session for the victims of the Szechuan Wen Chuan Earthquake.

20 December

Launch of a commemorative book on the 90th Anniversary of Anxi Xian You Bo Zhu as well as a book titled “Beliefs of Sheng Hong”.

2009

24 May

Commencement of Sheng Hong Wu Dang Taiji class.  Official opening of the Wu Dang Sheng Hong Health Preservation Centre, jointly officiated by Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple Association and Wu Dang Taoist Association, China.

29 August

Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple donated NT 30,000 to the people affected by the Typhoon Morakot in Taiwan.

13 – 20 November

Wudang Shenghong Health Preservation Centre organized a tour to Hubei Wuhan, Wu Yi Shan and Beijing for more than 100 members.

2010

6 August

Sheng Hong Arts Institute and its Nanyin (南音) troupe were established.

4 December

Organized the 4th World Sheng Hong Temple Exchange Programme.

2011

19 March

Birthday celebration of Tai Shang Lao Jun (太上老君).  Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple held the 3rd initiation rites of the Quan Zhen (全真) at San Qing Gong.  More than 40 students sought refuge in the Taoist Triple Gems – The Dao (道), The Scriptures and the Master.

2012

Sheng Hong Arts Institute collaborated with Xiamen Arts Centre to groom the first batch of traditional Chinese opera performers.  The students completed the 3-year programme and held its graduation performance at Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple.

Master Priest Huang Xin Cheng (黄信成) led a group of 32 members of the Scripture Chanting Group to Wudang (武当), China to mark the 600th Anniversary of Wudang.

2013

October

Mr Tan Thiam Lye, Director of Wudang Shenghong Health Preservation Centre led an entourage to visit Wudang Taoist Association.

8 November

Taoist Orchestra (Singapore) participated in the 13th Taoist Cultural Concert in Shanghai.

2014

27 April

Members of the Taoist Orchestra (Singapore) and Wudang Shenghong Health Preservation Centre were invited by Singapore Esplanade to perform at the annual “Music of Peace Concert”.

2015

February

Students of the Sheng Hong Arts Institute and Wudang Sheng Hong Health Preservation Centre performed at the annual River Hongbao Carnival.

April

Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple supported the Taoist Federation (Singapore) in organizing the Taoist Forum 2015 and Inter-Racial and Inter-Religious Grand Harmony Dinner graced by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

July

Mr Lim Chwee Kim, PBM donated $888,000 for the renovation at the temple, which included fabrication of new Deity statues, altar, nine-dragons throne, and eight bronze dragon pillars.

27 December

Opening of the Sheng Hong Arts Institute multi-purpose studio and launch of the Commemorative book “Opera” (看戏).

2016

February

Instructors and students of the Wudang Sheng Hong Health Preservation Centre partnered our Malay community to showcase a martial arts performance at the Chingay Parade.

2017

January

Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, Minister, Prime Minister’s Office, officially launched the Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple’s 100th Anniversary Celebrations.

2 – 7 April

The 5th statue of City God which arrived in Singapore in 1917 was transported back to the ancestral temple at Fujian Anxi County in China, followed by a grand procession during the Spring Festival.

22 September – 1 October

Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple celebrated its 100th Anniversary with an array of activities, which included a grand feast for the City God, dinner cum book launch, a religious procession, Wudang Martial Arts Night, a banquet to promote race and religious harmony, getai (歌台) performances with artistes from Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore, and the Taoist Initiation Ceremony co-organized with the Taoist Federation (Singapore).

2018

13 February

Member of Parliament for Marine Parade GRC Ms Tin Pei Ling graced the Spring Festival Light-up ceremony and launched the region’s first Mobile App (https://member.shtemple.org.sg/login) adopted by a temple for its devotees.

30 April

Commencement of the reconstruction of the Administrative Building.

11 July

Celebrated the birthday of Qing Xi Xian You Bo Zhu (清溪显佑伯主); Taoist Priests from Hun Yuan Dao Tan conducted a prayer ritual that lasted an entire day, while Priest Huang Xin Cheng led the Scripture Chanting Group and the Taoist Orchestra to conduct prayer at 8pm at the main hall of the Temple. The Temple also hosted the traditional Hokkien and Teochew operas and getai performance on the day.

21 – 25 August

The 32nd 7th Lunar Month Festival celebrations were held during this period.  Taoist priests performed rites to communicate with the underworld, to release souls of the deceased from purgatory and to offer food to them. The Temple also hosted the 7th Lunar Month Festival dinner.

23 September

The 36th Annual General Meeting of Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple Association was held.

2019

27 January

The 29th Awards & Donation Presentation Ceremony for Academic Merit Awards, Bursary Awards for students of Maha Bodhi School and Lunar New Year donations and Hong Bao for the needy was organized.

2 February

The official opening of Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple Spring Fair was held and the event was graced by Ms Tin Pei Ling, Member of Parliament (MP) in the Macpherson Single Member Constituency and Advisor to Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple Association. Taoist rituals included ushering the God of Wealth, praying to Taisui, Prosperity Hong Bao, Birthday celebrations of Qing Shui Zu Shi (清水祖师), Birthday celebrations of the Jade Emperor; Bu Yun (补运 Enhancing fortune), Birthday celebrations of Tiger God and traditional Chinese opera, getai performances were held during the Lunar Month.

24 – 30 March

Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple organized a heritage tour to visit the Sheng Hong Temple in Fujian Province, China. The group attended the temple’s annual procession and visited various Taoist temples.

30 June

Celebrated the birthday of Qing Xi Xian You Bo Zhu (City God); the Taoist Priests from Hun Yuan Dao Tan conducted the prayer for one whole day, while Priest Huang Xin Cheng led the Scripture Chanting Group and the Taoist Orchestra to conduct prayer during the night at 8pm at the main hall of the Temple. The Temple also hosted the traditional Hokkien and Teochew operas and “Getai” performance on the day.

11 – 15 August

The 33rd 7th Lunar Month Festival celebrations were held during this period. Taoist priests performed rites to communicate with the underworld, to release souls of the deceased from purgatory and to offer food to them. The Temple also hosted the 7th Lunar Month Festival dinner.

The 20th Management Committee of Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple Association and the 15th Management Committee of Sheng Hong-Feng Xuan United Temple assumed office.

22 – 29 October

Students of Wudang Shenghong Health Preservation Centre visited Wudang in Hubei Province and Sheng Hong Temple in Fujian, China for a heritage tour led by Mr Tan Thiam Lye BBM(L).

18 – 23 December

Taisui Thanksgiving prayer ritual was held with Taoist Priests leading the prayers for devotees.

25 27 December

The Taoist Orchestra (Singapore) performed at the 19th Taoist Cultural Performance in Hong Kong.

2020

12 January

18 January

Society of Sheng Hong Welfare Services published its first book “Those Years… Footprints of Life”.

Construction for the new Administrative Building was completed. The 5-storey building houses the various offices of the Temple, the Taoist Orchestra (Singapore), Wudang Shenghong Health Preservation Centre (Singapore), Sheng Hong Arts Institute (Singapore) and Taoist College (Singapore).

22 January

The official opening of Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple Spring Fair graced by Member of Parliament Ms Tin Pei Ling.

Annual Temple Spring Fair celebrations included ushering in the God of Wealth, praying to Taisui, Prosperity Hong Bao, Birthday celebration of Qing Shui Zu Shi, Birthday celebration of the Jade Emperor; Bu Yun (补运 enhancing one’s fortune), Birthday of Tiger God, traditional Chinese opera, and getai performances were held during the Lunar Month.

1 February

Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, Speaker of Parliament of Singapore, Member of Parliament for Marine Parade GRC and Honorary Advisor of Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple Association, and several Grassroots Leaders visited the Temple.

5 February

In view of COVID-19 advisories, the Temple started the temperature taking requirement and restricted the number of devotees in the temple at any one time.

8 March

15th Day of 2nd Lunar month, the Scripture Chanting Group held a ritual at San Qing Gong (三清宫) to celebrate the Birthday of Tai Shang Lao Jun (太上老君).

7 April

In response to the COVID-19 Circuit Breaker and on the advice of the Taoist Federation (Singapore), the Temple was closed its doors to the public.

13 April

Wudang Shenghong Health Preservation Centre launched its first online lesson for its students.

17 April

The Temple started a daily praying session that was streamed “live” from 10.30am to 12.30pm on our Facebook.

2 June

The Temple reopened to the public in accordance with Safe Management measures including restricting the number of devotees in the temple at any one time.

5 July

The temple’s online devotees service platform was fully launched to the public. Online services include contributions to purchase robes for the Deities, donation and registration for blessing lamps.

July

Our affiliated organizations – Taoist College (Singapore) and Sheng Hong Arts Institute – officially relocated to the new Sheng Hong Temple Administrative Block from San Qing Gong (三清宫).

18 July

28th Day of the 5th Lunar month, an online getai (歌台) was organized to celebrate the Birthday of Qing Xi Xian You Bo Zhu (清溪显佑伯主).

30 August – 1 September

The temple held a 3-day online getai (歌台) marathon to celebrate the 7th Lunar Month Festival. The traditionally hosted 7th Lunar Month Festival dinner was cancelled due to COVID-19 Safe Management measures, and the “live” auction was changed to a “closed bidding” auction instead.

27 September

The temple held a praying session for Meng Fu Lang Jun (孟府郎君). Our Committee Members and students from the Nanyin (南音) class of Sheng Hong Arts Institute participated in the session.

16 – 20 December

The temple organized a 5-day Taisui thanksgiving prayer ritual.

2021

31 Jan

The 31st Academic Merit Awards, Bursary for Maha Bodhi School and Lunar New Year Donations & Hongbao Presentation Ceremony was organized. Mayor Mohd Fahmi graced the ceremony as the Guest-of-Honour.

February – March

The temple organized the Lunar New Year Spring Temple Fair that included ushering in the God of Wealth, Tai Sui Prayers, celebrating the Birthday of Divine Master Qingshui Qing Shui Zu Shi (清水祖师) and Birthday of Jade Emperor (天公), Enhance One’s Fortune Bu Yun (补运), and the Birthday of Tiger Lord.

18 April

Mayor Mohd Fahmi officiated the opening ceremony of the 107-day traditional Chinese opera performances to mark the Birthday of Sheng Hong Deity.

15 June

Launch of Islandwide Delivery Service for auspicious items of the temple.

7 July

The temple celebrated the Birthday of Sheng Hong Deity with traditional prayer rituals while adhering to strict safe management measures.

Singapore Book of Records – An achievement made possible by devotees when the temple was presented with the Singapore Book of Records for the largest display of Deities’ Robes. A total of 2120 Deities Robes were offered by devotees as thanksgiving to the Deities.

7 August

Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple Association was officially certified #SGClean.

20 August

The Annual General Meeting and election of the 21st Executive Committee was held.

22 August

The temple celebrated the 7th Lunar Month Festival under strict safe management measures. A “silent” auction was held to keep the traditions of bidding for auspicious items during the festival alive amid the pandemic.

18 September

The inauguration ceremony of the 21st Executive Committee was witnessed by our legal advisor Mr Lee Xiancong.

16 October

The Association organized the “Racial Harmony & Cultural Appreciation Nite” to promote racial harmony and to encourage the community to persevere amid the challenging COVID-19 situation. The variety show was broadcast ‘live’ on various platforms.

15 to 19 December

The Association held the “Tai Sui Thanksgiving” prayer rituals and crossing the “Bridge of Blessings” ceremony to give thanks to Tai Sui and to seek blessings for the devotees.

2022

3 Jan

Registration for the annual “Enhance One’s Fortune” rituals for 2022 commenced at 5am.

23 Jan

The 32nd Academic Merit Awards, Bursary for Maha Bodhi School and Lunar New Year Donations & Hongbao Presentation Ceremony was organized. Mayor Mohd Fahmi graced the ceremony as the Guest-of-Honour.
